Lactose intolerance and its prevalence

Lactose Study

Methods:

96 confirmed H2 positive, lactose-intolerant patients experiencing GI symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, bloating were enrolled. All of them received β–galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae at a standard dose.

Results:

The administration of lactose shows:

  • Lactase is effective in decreasing H2 levels and cumulative values of breath H2 excretion (40%).
  • Regarding gastrointestinal symptoms, a significant reduction was observed.

Probiotic Study

Methods:

11 lactose-intolerant patients were administered with Bifidobacteirum longum/day in three intervals plus yogurt for 2 weeks.

Effects on colonic microbiota and gastrointestinal symtom scores were assessed after supplementation.

Results:

The administration of the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum:

  • Modifies the amount and metabolic activities of the colonic microbiota with beneficial outcomes.
  • Alleviates symptoms in lactose-intolerant patients.
